What's In the Name?
Hazel's Light
Hazel's Light is named partly to honor Julia's mother, Hazel Whitworth.
Hazel was in assisted living under the care of Julia and Benny for 7 years
.
Hazel
lived in 4 different assisted living homes. Some were big. Some were
small. All had their advantages and their problems.

In 2005, while in a residential care home (small assisted living), Hazel
passed away. A few days later, one of the caregivers said, "When your
mom died, the light went out of this house."

Hazel's "light" was her relationship with God in Jesus Christ. Therefore,
Hazel's Light is named for Hazel, but also for the Lord that is the Light.

Through the 7 years and the 4 assisted living facilities, Julia and Benny
learned a lot about assisted living - the good, the blah, and the truly
appalling.  After Hazel died, they received a Call to begin assisted living,
with the goal of bringing vibrant life to elders. This includes:

Spiritual care:  worship, prayer meetings, scripture study, and
individual ministry. Julia is an ordained nondenominational
Christian
minister.

Massage therapy:  reduces the risk of falling, boosts immune function,
meets the need for nurturing touch, sometimes finds medical conditions that
may need attention, and helps move fluid out of feet, legs, hands, and arms.
Julia is certified in an elder massage technique called
"Daybreak."

Excellent nutrition:  improves mood, promotes healing, improves
appetite, and gives a general sense of well being. Good, attractive food
gives elders something to look forward to.

Daily activities:  far exceeds the state requirement of one hour of
activities per week. Hazel's Light is a place to go to LIVE. Exercise,
volunteer activities, crafts, puzzles, games, movies, arts, and occasional
road trips keep elders engaged in life.

Transparency:  gives you peace of mind. Julia and Benny will be
honest and up front with you about policies, finances, compliance, your
loved one, and any other issues that you want to discuss with them. We
keep these conversations confidential from anyone else except staff that
need to know.

Love:  included in the job description of every staff member. Love is
what we do.
